Success at the GTC Scotland Awards

Categories: School News

We were delighted to be the first secondary school in Scotland to be awarded the prestigious Excellence in Professional Learning Awards from the General Teaching Council for Scotland at a glittering award ceremony in Glasgow. This involved a visit from eight panel members who spent time talking to staff and pupils about what it is like to be a learner in St Ninian’s High School. The report written by the panel says this about our school:-

“Key to the work of St Ninian’s is striving to ensure that its young people are fully prepared for life in the 21st century. The young people who attend the school are encouraged by all of the staff to be ambitious in their achievements, confident in their abilities, responsible within their community and effective in their learning by developing the talents of each individual. During the course of the GTCS one-day visit to the school it was clear that there is a real sense of equity and deep respect for each other. Parents and pupils, teachers and colleagues through different professional learning activities, forums and involvement in the life of the whole school, shape their own learning. Across the day, it was clear that learning is what St Ninian’s is all about.”

Youthlink Worker of the Year Award Success

Categories: School News

This year’s Youthlink Youth Worker of the Year Awards saw a member of our school community being recognised for the great work they do with our young people. Bill Reside is a Youth Provision Development worker who has been a partner to our school for a number of years. Bill’s work with our young people includes leading outdoor learning, delivering Wider Achievement awards and coordinating volunteering elements of the curriculum. A well known face to all, Bill spends time working with our young people helping them to recognise the great potential they have and building confidence in their abilities.

The awards ceremony took place at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Glasgow and Bill was accompanied by our Head Teacher Paul McLaughlin, Head Girl Erin Gallacher, Head Boy Ryan Brodie and Mr McEwan, Head of S6.  Mr McLaughlin said of Bill’s achievement:

"We are delighted that Bill has been recognised for the great work he does with us and other groups in our area. He plays a key role in many of our young peoples’ lives and is a true partner to us and a valued member of our school community”

Bill was overwhelmed with his award and recognised our school in accepting it.

“I am very proud to have won this award and it was only made possible because of the ethos of the school itself.  St Ninian's is a credit to Mr McLaughlin, the staff and pupils. Even my colleagues recognise it's a unique place to work in and we don't experience that uniqueness in other schools.”

St Ninian's High School Tackles a Rubbish Problem

Categories: School News

St Ninian’s High School has always taken its role in the local community seriously and has been proud of the position it holds in it. Now its sense of community pride is all the more visible following the installation of new litter bins in the area surrounding the school.

The new bins, emblazoned with the school badge, have been placed along the route most pupils walk when returning from the town centre at lunchtime. Head teacher, Mr McLaughlin, is delighted with the bins and hopes that they show how seriously the school takes its responsibility for maintaining the local area and the wider environment.

The school’s Eco Committee has worked hard over the last few months to secure the bins and to highlight the issue of litter-dropping with the student body. The committee believe that the bins should act as a reminder to pupils that even when they are outwith the school gates they should remember the lessons learned and show their respect for the environment.
