David Whitton Visit

On Wednesday 3rd of February David Whitton, the MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden, visited the school to spend time with the Higher and Advanced Higher modern studies classes to help them with their studies. David Whitton started by answering the questions from the pupils. Questions ranged from local constituency issues to electoral reform within the United Kingdom. He provided informative answers allowing pupils to fully understand the topics that had arisen and improve their knowledge of the subject.

The Advanced Higher class were then provided with the opportunity to ask David Whitton about their dissertation topics which range from women in prisons to the causes of crime and the arming of police. This allowed pupils to gain opinions on their chosen topic which will be very helpful when writing their dissertation. He also gave his views on the alternatives to prison sentences and purpose of prisons. The issue of whether private prisons are just as effective as state run prisons caused quite a heated debate. The pupils also enjoyed a lively discussion which centred on the problems of alcohol within society and the effect of social class on the causes of crime.

The pupils really enjoyed Mr.Whitton’s visit and we would like to thank him for sparing time from his busy schedule to come and help us to improve our knowledge within modern studies. His advice on the pupils’ dissertation topics will no doubt prove invaluable.
