Multilingual Debate - Heriot Watt

Categories: School News

On the 24 February a group of S4/S5 pupils, accompanied by Ms Reynolds and Mrs McIntyre, headed off to Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh for a Multilingual Debate. The motion was “This house believes that the political apathy of the X-Factor generation is endangering democracy.

The discussion took place in French, Spanish and German, as undergraduate students simultaneously translated each language into English.

Our pupils commented :

“This experience enhanced our Listening skills for Languages and also helped improve our accents”.

“It gave us a flavour of university life and provided information on why languages are useful and how they open many doors in life”.

“The interpreters did a very good job translating all the languages and gave us a useful insight into what we could achieve if we continue to study languages at university level”.
