National Drawing Competition

S1 pupils have taken part in a National Drawing competition.

“The key to unlocking your imagination is in your own hands -  its called a pencil” – John Byrne

Every pupil in S1 has submitted a fantasy style imaginative self portrait to the John Byrne National Drawing Competition.

Sweatshop Project

On October 8th the Art Department was turned into a textile factory. S1 pupils were put to work as the Child Labour and set the tasks of producing fabric shopping bags from sheets of organic cotton alongside a range of T-Shirts. The bags were sewn on machines and then the pupils’ designs were printed onto the bags using screen printing and heat transfer. The pupils embellished the designs by hand sewing buttons and beads onto them. The bags and T-Shirts have been selling well since the project and all proceeds raised will be used to buy livestock for communities in developing countries through the SCIAF “Real Gifts” programme. Bags are on sale for £5 and T-Shirts are selling for £3 while stocks last!

The Sweatshop project is interdisciplinary and other departments including Home Economics, Maths, Modern Studies, Business, RMPS, Geography, History and English are also teaching pupils about issues related to this topic to help connect their learning.
