In Design Technology pupils develop knowledge and skills in Design & Manufacture, Graphic Techniques and the impact of new technologies. They use computer software to improve design ideas, research the impact of new technologies and develop skills in making, presenting and justifying their ideas. Pupils are also able to make sense of the design process and appreciate the diversity of people and processes involved in producing new products. The problem solving and higher order thinking skills that pupils develop in designing innovative products will be transferable to any problem solving context.
What will pupils do?
Pupils will continue to improve skills within their broad general education, as well as develop more specialised skills that will equip them to embark on National qualifications.
Two specific areas that pupils will focus on will be Graphic Communication and Design & Manufacture.
- Develop skills in manual sketching and technical drawing
- Develop skills in CAD software in 2D & 3D and see the benefits of CAD
- Use Graphic Design skills to see how it is used in the promotion of new products
- Develop presentation skills.
Design and Manufacturing
· Be introduced to the Design process and undertake design projects.
· Generate ideas and decide on the most appropriate solutions.
· Investigate how technology has impacted product design & society
· Develop skills in making in different materials and use a wide range of tools & Machinery
· Discuss advantages/ disadvantages and environmental issues surrounding different materials
What can pupils do next?
Pupils who complete the course will be in a strong position to sit National 4 or 5 qualifications in both Graphic Communication and Design & Manufacture.
Continuing on to S5-6 pupils will also be given the opportunity to take up N4/5 Practical Woodworking Skills.
- Develop skills in woodworking techniques
- Develop skills in measuring and marking out timber sections and sheet materials
- Carry out safe working practices in a workshop environment
- Be practical, creative and develop problem solving skills
- Develop an understanding of sustainability in a Practical Woodworking context
Further progression routes include:
· A range of Design & Engineering related Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)
· Degrees in Graphic Design, Product Design, Architecture, CAD and
· Engineering disciplines
· Employment and/or training in the Engineering and Design industries (SVQs, Modern Apprenticeships)
