The headteacher of St Ninian’s High School in Kirkintilloch collected a prestigious accolade at the Scottish Education Awards Tuesday 16 June, which is sponsored by the Scottish Government to celebrate success and excellence in Scottish education.
Paul McLaughlin picked-up the Headteacher of the Year Award after being nominated by colleagues for his vision and commitment to the school and pupils.
Since arriving at St Ninian’s in 2004, Paul has made a huge impact on the life and culture of the school. His presence and self-confidence has inspired pupils and teachers alike. He is tireless in working to create a shared mission and strategic plan which inspires and motivates pupils, staff and all other members of the school community.
Under Paul’s leadership St Ninian’s High School is now classed by the Scottish Government as a ‘School of Ambition’ and pupils are involved in a variety of activities including Eco Schools, Columba 1400 Ambassadors Leadership Programme, World Challenge, Debating Society, Enterprising Education and Justice and Peace Group. Each of these programmes effectively promotes the rights of children and young people.
The school has also achieved a Gold Award for Healthy School which reflects Paul’s commitment to helping children and young people succeed and thrive through being healthy, staying safe, enjoying school life and achieving.
He has also created a culture of support and respect between St Ninian’s and the community through Parent Council links with local parishes and the many collaborative projects that are part of the school calendar. The school’s website, frequent newsletters, surveys and consultations all help to maintain a two-way flow of information, ensuring St Ninian’s is connected with people in the local community.
Paul was selected by the judges as ‘Headteacher of the Year’ in recognition of his inspirational leadership and his collaborative approach to sharing the school’s vision across the wider community. As a result of this success, Paul was invited to Downing Street.

Councillor Una Walker, Convener of the Education & Cultural Services Committee said: “This year’s standard was exceptionally high and I am delighted that our education professionals in East Dunbartonshire have excelled in the prestigious Scottish Education Awards.I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to the winners and to all others who were nominated.”
