We have an online library catalogue which pupils can access from any device connected to the internet. Pupils can use our catalogue to search for resources (physical and digital), and are given a log-in so they can manage their own library accounts.

All of the library's eBooks are searchable on the catalogue, but you can also visit our eBooks Library to see what's available. Please see Ms McLean for log-in details.

The library has a range of materials to support the curriculum, including non-fiction books, magazines, revision guides, and the facility to print past papers. We also currently subscribe to online resources The Day, Issues Online and Complete Issues. These resources can be accessed outside of school: please ask in the library for log-in details.

We work closely with our Careers Advisers from Skills Development Scotland to deliver careers sessions to all S2 pupils. These sessions showcase our Careers Library, highlighting printed resources which pupils can use when considering subject choices, future training, further or higher education, or work. Pupils are also supported in their career planning with access to online resources My World of Work and Planit.

The library also offers pupils the chance to develop their employability skills by becoming a library assistant. Pupils who volunteer in the library are registered for the Scottish Government’s Saltire Awards for volunteering.

All S1 pupils take part in the Library Skills programme, where they learn how find and evaluate information in books and online. The programme covers the importance of citing sources to avoid plagiarism and how to create a bibliography. The Suitcase Project – which all S1 pupils take part in – allows pupils to practise the research skills they have learned.

Research Skills sessions are also delivered to S3 – S6 pupils (tailored to year group). These sessions equip pupils with the skills to search for current, accurate and relevant information in books and online.

The library has 21 PCs with Internet access and printing facilities, as well as 10 tablets for use in the library. An interactive whiteboard and projector are available for staff use.

The library stocks a range of resources to support our pupils and staff to read for pleasure. We have a wide collection of fiction and non-fiction books, audio books, graphic novels, comics, quick reads and magazines. We have reading lists available for all year groups, and S1 & S2 pupils take part in Library Book Bingo during their weekly library visit. Senior pupils are offered a dedicated session in the library which supports them with choosing a book to read for pleasure. 

We have an area dedicated to reading for pleasure, stocked with new books, magazines, comfy seating and a noticeboard for book reviews and recommendations.

Our Pupil Book Group meets every two weeks: we build meetings around a theme chosen by pupils and run competitions, quizzes and activities throughout the term. After Easter we run a Shadowing Book Group, where pupils from S1-S3 read books shortlisted for that year’s Carnegie Award.

Senior pupils have the opportunity to take part in our Shared Reading programme, which equips them with the confidence and skills to share a picture book with younger pupils at a local primary school.

We also run events and trips which promote reading for pleasure amongst our pupils and staff. These include annual trips to the Edinburgh Book Festival and the Kids Lit Quiz, author visits and workshops, events to celebrate National Poetry Day, Book Week Scotland and World Book Day, and creative writing showcases.

The Library provides a welcoming and supportive environment, and is open before, during and after classes.
